Abstract:
This study aimed at investigating the Socio-Pragmatic aspects, and also at finding out the kinds of direct commissive expressions employed by the characters in the novel entitled (The Wedding of Zein) alongside with the reasons of using them and the role of context in conveying meaning. The research employs descriptive qualitative method. Data of the research are taken from the committing expressions used in the form of conversations in Tayeb Salih's (Wedding of Zein). Hence, the technique of sampling is purposive. The novel entitled (The Wedding of Zein), contains about 17 direct commissive speech acts, sorted into 7 types. There are three direct invitations, five direct promises, a direct oath, three direct pledging, two direct offers, two vows and a threatening. The reason why each type is employed depends on the degree of the relationship between the participants and the purpose behind using it. Hopefully, this research will be useful for other researchers who interest this field of inquiry. They can have other researches discussing different points of views as well as from other data sources such as drama and film shows either in the same or other approaches.
