Abstract:
Phytochemical screening of alcoholic extract of cassia arereh heartwood indicated presence of steroids, tannins, carbohydrates, saponins, terpenes,
and flavonoids. Alkaloids and glycosides were not detected.
Four flavonoids (compounds I,II,III and IV) were obtained in the pure state by using different chromatographic techniques . These compounds were identified via spectroscopic tools : IR, UV, 1H NMR , and MS spectroscopy .When compounds ( I,II,III) and the ethyl actate extract were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity, only compounds I and II exhibited activity. Compound I showed activity against Staphylococcus aureus while compound II exhibited activity against Psuedomonas aeruginosa .
