Abstract:
This analytical case control study was conducted in period between March 2014 to
May 2014, to assess plasma lipids profile among alcohol consumer (Male) in North
Darfur state. The subjects participants in this study were 100 alcohol consumer and 50
abstainers served as controls.
Medical history was obtained from the participants by questionnaire, and plasma lipid
profile was estimated by Reflotron plus system. Age, nutritional deficiency or any
pre-existing cardiopulmonary or hepatobiliary disorders and smoking were adjusted.
The study revealed that, alcohol consumption is statistically associated with the
elevating lipid levels; TC, TGs, HDL and LDL (p values, 0.000, 0.000, 0.000 and
0.018 respectively). The duration of alcohol intake was positively correlated with the
level of TC, TG, LDL and HDL at 0.01 levels (2-tailed). There are statistical
associations noted between type of alcohol and increase serum lipids; TC, TGs, HDL
and LDL (p values, 0.013, 0.001, 0.019 and 0.03 respectively). Regulatory of alcohol
intake is statistically associated with increase serum lipid profiles TC, TGs, HDL and
LDL (p values, 0.000, 0.001, 0.000 and 0.001 respectively). There are significant
associations observed between occasionally and regular use of alcohol and TC and
HDL (P values, 0.001 and 0.000 respectively), and no association with increase levels
of TGs and LDL (p values, 0.15 and 0.13 respectively).
Depending to this study the consumption of alcohol had potentially adverse effects by
elevating lipids profile, so alcohol should be banned and health promotion should be
targeted to alcoholic consumers.
