Abstract:
Medication prescribed for psychological disorders were suspected to be associated with cardiovascular diseases and disturbance of lipids metabolism. Patients with psychiatric symptoms in Sudan were ignored and might be at risk of developing heart and lipid metabolism disorders. Accordingly this study was conducted to assess the effect of antipsychotic medications on lipid profile of psychiatric men in Kobar Mental Asylum and Psychiatric Hospital in Khartoum. The participants in this study were sixty Psychiatric men and fifty non-Psychiatric served as controls.
Medical history was obtained from the participants by questionnaire, and serum lipid profile was estimated by Colorimetric methods. The investigations performed include Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density Lipoprotein (HDL). Age, nutritional status or any pre-existing cardiopulmonary or hepatobiliary disorders and smoking were adjusted.
The results of this study revealed that, antipsychotic medications are statistically associated with the elevated lipid levels; (TGs and LDL) p values, 0.000 and 0.030 respectively, and significance decrease in HDL level (p value 0.000), no significant difference observed between TC levels (p values <0.310), compare with control group, the duration of antipsychotic drugs was positively correlated level of TG (P<0.00), while with TC, HDL and LDL level are shows no correlation ( p value, 0.310, 0.143 and 0.669) respectively.
Depending to this study, Lipid levels in subjects who used antipsychotics medication were significantly increase in TGs and LDL levels and significantly decrease in HDL levels. So the use of antipsychotic medications may increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
