Abstract:
Hemodialysis is a technique used to remove toxic substance from the blood when the kidney are not able to remove them satisfactorily from the circulation.
This study was done to estimate the serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride level pre and post dialysis. To do these 50 patients with chronic renal failure were involved and 30 healthy persons as control.
Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol level were measured pre and post dialysis in order to assess the effect of hemodialysis on serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol concentration spectrophotometry.
The result of this study showed significant increase in the mean of total cholesterol (137± 38and 155± 45) mg/dl before and after hemodialysis respectively, Pvalue=0.03, and showed significant increase in the mean of triglyceride (129±50and 165±60) mg/dl before and after hemodialysis respectively, Pvalue=0.00
Also, the result of this study showed significant increase in the mean of HDL cholesterol (25±8and 33±10) mg/dl before and after hemodialysis respectively, Pvalue=0.00
Study conclude that patients under hemodialysis had increase plasma cholesterol and may lead to hypercholesterolemia and hence with increase risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease and lead to increase rate among the patients with ESRD.
