Abstract:
The experiments in this study were carried out at the laboratory of the Entomology, Department of Plant Protection, College of Agricultural Studies, Sudan University of Science and Technology, in June 2011.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of hexane and ethanol extracts of jatropha seeds (Jatropha curcas L) against the adults of Asian fruit fly (Bactrocera invadens).
Different concentrations of extracted Jatropha seeds, specifically 1.25%, 2.5%, 3.75% and 5%. were applied on the adults of Asian fruit flies. Topical application and contact exposure methods were used in this study and the mortality results were taken every 24, 48 and 72 hours.
From the obtained results, it was clear that the extracted Jatropha seeds have toxic effect against the adult of fruit flies. The topical application of hexane and ethanol extracts of Jatropha seeds gave a mortality of 90% and 73.3% after 72 hours of exposure respectively. On the other hand, the contact method using hexane and ethanol extracts of Jatropha seeds gave a mortality of 73% and 63.3% after 72 hours of exposure respectively.
Generally the hexane extracts of the Jatropha seeds gave higher mortality than their corresponding counter parts of the ethanol extracts of Jatropha seeds.
The results showed that the lethal effect of Jatropha seeds extracts increased by increasing the time of exposure.
