dc.description.abstractOBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to establish the role of ultrasound in a jaundice patient in Asian population mainly U.A.E population. Ultrasonographic investigation was done to the individuals without known the cause of the jaundice. METHODS: A total of 100 patients whom diagnosed as jaundice, were studied prospectively in a period of one year (2005-2006), at sheik Khalifa Bin Zayed Hospital –Ajman in U.A.E. Clinical examination, Lab. Tests and ultrasound were done. Result obtained were, 63 patients associated with (+ve) ultrasound finding distributed in the following manner: 46 patients appear with dilated biliary tree (posthepatic) or obstruct. Jaundice with overall sensitivity of (73.01) %. Hepatocellular jaundice occurs in 9 patients (5 liver cirrhosis, 2 hepatitis, 2 liver congestion) out of 13 with overall sensitivity of (69.2) %. Prehepatic jaundice 2 cases out of 4(3 Thalassemia, 1 G6PD) with overall sensitivity of (50) %. Six cases associated with gall bladder stones without other finding. CONCLUSION We concluded that ultrasound modality having significant role in diagnosing different type of jaundice.en_US
