dc.description.abstract | A cross-sectional study conducted during the period from March to October 2009, compared serum levels of urate and creatinine of 50 Sudanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (as a test group) and 30 apparently healthy volunteers (as a control group). Participants in this study were from Hajalsafi hospital and Khartoum north diabetic center, both in Khartoum state, Sudan. Age and gender of the test group were matched with the control group. The serum levels of urate and creatinine were measured using reagent kits and a spectrophotometer (B.T.S-310) from Biosystem company. Serum urate showed insignificant difference, whereas serum creatinine was significantly raised, in the test group compared to the control group. Mean ± SD for the test group versus the control group: (5.29 ± 1.30) versus (4.89 ± 1.12) mg/dl, respectively for serum urate (P=0.526). (1.14 ± 0.33) versus (0.93 ± 0.15) mg/dl, respectively for serum creatinine (P=0.001). In the test group serum urate showed a weak positive correlation, whereas serum creatinine showed a moderate positive correlation with the duration of diabetes mellitus. From this study, it is concluded that; in Sudanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus the serum levels of urate is not affected and the serum creatinine is raised. In addition, serum urate and creatinine are positively correlated with the duration of the disease. | en_US |
