Abstract: | This was across-sectional descriptive and analytical study, conducted in Albolok teaching hospital, during the period from August 2008 to March 2009. The aim of this study was done to determine the frequency of iron deficiency anemia among the micocytic hypochromic anemia, in infants of the age between (2 to12) months referred to Albolok hospital -Omdurman- Khartoum state. 250 patients (139 males and 111 females) were informed about the study and parents agreement for participation was obtained. The study population was divided to three groups, (2-5), (6-9) and (10-12) months. Venous blood of 5ml was bled (2.5ml in EDTA containers and 2.5ml in plain containers) and investigated for iron deficiency anemia. Complete blood counts (CBC), blood film, reticulocyte count, serum iron and serum ferritin concentrations were carried out. Against 50 normal sample as control. Fully automated hematological analyzer (Mythic18) was used for the CBC analysis, and fully automated Biosystem A25 was used for the serum iron profile analysis. Manual analysis was used for blood film and reticulocyte count. All patients had mean hemoglobin level 8.5 g/dl , PCV 26.2 %,MCV 60.3 fl, MCH 20 pg, MCHC 31g/dl ,1.2 % serum iron and serum ferritin respectively 31.9 (μg/dl) ,113.4(μg/dl) The results found that the frequency of iron deficiency anemia was (19.2)% |
