Abstract: | Background and Aim: Thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) have profound effects on cardiovascular functions. Thyroid hormones have many important biological effects. The study aim to evaluate serum TSH in Sudanese patients with essential hypertension. Materials and methods: this was cross section comparative study, conducted during the period from May to October 2020. Forty Sudanese adult aged between 40 to 80 years with essential hypertension and forty apparently healthy as control groups, age and sex were matched. The serum TSH was measured by using Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA) (plate reader-Germany); the date obtained was analyzed by used SPSS version 16 program. Results: There were significantly increased in serum TSH in case compared to control group (case 6.0± 2.1; control 3.8 ± 0.67 µIU/ml) P- value (0.00), there were significant increase in systolic BP in case compared to control group (case 141.5±21.3; control 114.4±11.3) P value (0.00) and there were significant increase in diastolic BP in case compared to control group (case 87.8±12.5; control 76.3±6.5.) P value (0.00) respectively. There was insignificant difference in means of BMI in case group when compared to control group (case 26.9±4.4Kg/m²;control 28.5±7.9Kg/m²) P value=0.25.Moreover, There was significant positive correlation between serum TSH and age(r=0.318, P-value 0.04), insignificant negative correlation between serum TSH and BMI (r=-0.22,P-value 0.89). Conclusion: The study concluded that essential hypertension patients had high level in serum TSH. |
