dc.description.abstractKidney failure occurs when the kidneys partly or completely lose their ability to carry out normal functions. Osteomalacia may be part of the spectrum of osseous abnormalities that can be observed in patients with chronic renal insufficiency. Osteomalacia is characterized by incomplete mineralization of normal osteoid tissue. This condition is termed by renal osteodystrophy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of chronic renal failure and osteomalacia in adult Sudanese patients who attending Khartoum Teaching Hospital, renal dialysis unit. This is a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study conducted at Khartoum Teaching Hospital during the period of first of February 2010 to the first of May 2010. This study included both sexes: 30 males (75%) and 10 females (25%). 2.5 ml of venous blood was bleed in lithium heparin container and investigated for calcium level and ALP activity. Semi automated spectrophotometer (micro lab 300) was used for the calcium and ALP enzyme measurement. The results of all patients showed that calcium levels were slightly decreased (mean value was 7.66 ± 1.38 mg/dl) than normal mean value (8.5 – 10.5 mg/dl), but this reduction was statistically insignificant (p value 0.8), while ALP activity results were slightly increased (295.93 ± 206.68 u/l) than normal mean value (90 – 270 u/l), this increase was statistically significant (p value 0.04). In conclusion: The results indicated that there was statistically significant relationship between the chronic renal failure and osteomalacia (P value < 0.05).en_US
