Abstract: | Thyroid hormones are essential for an adequate growth and development of the kidney. Hypothyroidism accompanied by a decrease in glomerular filtration. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of serum Cystatin c and electrolytes in-patients with hypothyroidism. A hundred subjects classified as 50 apparently healthy as control group and 50 hypothyroidism patients as case group were enrolled in this study; i Chroma immunofluorescence reader was used to measure Cystatin c and sodium was measured by ion selective electrode, calcium was measured by cobas. The results of the study showed that: There was a significant decrease in Cystatin c level in patients when compared to control with p= value 0.000 (mean ± SD: 0.21 ± 0.17, 0.84± 0.22 mg/L for case and control respectively) ,there is a significant increase in sodium level in patients when compared to control with p value= 0.033(mean ± SD: 140.4 ± 3.61,139.0 ± 2.69 mmol/L for case and control respectively. there was a significant decrease in calcium level in patients when compared to control with p value= 0.0000 (mean ± SD: 7.91 ± 1.26 ,9.10 ± 0.36 mg/L for case and control respectively) . Person’s correlation results showed a positive correlation between sodium and duration of disease ,between Cystatin c level (r=0.473, p=0.001);negative correlation between Cystatin c level and age (r=-0.33,p=0.022), calcium and duration of disease(r=-0.390 ,p=0.005),Cystatin c and duration of disease(r=-0.481,p=0.006), no correlation between sodium and calcium with age (r=0.250, p=0.080),( r=0.216, p=0.133) and no correlation between potassium and duration (r=0.264, p=0.064). In conclusion: in hypothyroidism patients; serum Cystatin c and calcium are low and sodium increase. |
