dc.description.abstractThe aim of the study is to examine the methods and teaching materials that are used in teaching and learning of the grammar in Sudanese universities. A sample composed of 327 students was selected from four universities that teach French in Sudan to know the opinions of students concerning the effectiveness of the methods and teaching materials used in teaching the grammar. The statistical analysis of the opinions of the students has revealed that direct method is most effective method of teaching grammar. Concerning teaching materials, books and blackboards are commonly. The study found that in spite of the expansion of teaching of French language in Sudan, and the advances resulting from the Information Technology revolution, the technology employed in the teaching grammar in Sudanese universities is still traditional. Moreover, it is found that the traditional teaching methods employed do not meet the students’ needs and expectations. For enriching the teaching of French language, and improving the performance of Sudanese students, the study proposes that effective methods that can be easily implemented in Sudan, such as group work and role playing, be used. The study also recommends the identification and use of effective internet material in the teaching of French, especially because internet sources are accessible and easy to use by most of the students.en_US
