Abstract: | The present study attempts to investigate the role of social media networking in improving English oral communication, and to draw the attention of teachers, students, educationists, and those who are interested and in charge of education toward the importance of social media networking in improving English language speaking skill. The aim of this study is to draw the attention toward learning oral communication skills via modern technology. The method used was a questionnaire and an experimental study. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire for (50) English language tutors from Arab Open University, Saudi Arabia and Sudan Branches. The other tool was a speaking test for (22) beginner students from Arab Open University, Riyadh Branch. A questionnaire of (15) statements was distributed during teachers' free time slot, while the pre-test and post-test was given to every student in isolation in their formal class schedule. After two months training a post test was given to the same students within the same questions in their pre-test. Data were statistically analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The findings of the study indicate that Skype, YouTube and WhatsApp have a great influence on speaking. In addition, the study points out that these social media applications have more stronger impact on speaking than writing. It also suggests that the teacher who wishes to improve his students' speaking skill has to consider these social media applications toward the learning process. Finally, the study points out that social media networking has a great role in improving students' English language oral communication skill. More research should be taken to fill the gaps that this study points out. |
