Abstract: The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is one of FACTS devices which resembles in many respects a rotating synchronous condenser used for voltage regulation and reactive power compensation in this study, it was used to improve voltages, when Sudanese National grid (500/220) KV at peak load is implemented as a case study, the location and specification of the STATCOM was determined on basis of the weaknesses in the network, the function PSAT in MATLAB is used for simulation. The study demonstrates that STATCOM can regulate the voltage and also compensate the reactive power in power system networks.
