Investigating the Difficulties of Pronouncing The English Consonant Sounds by Undergraduates

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the difficulties of pronouncing the English consonant sounds by undergraduates . the researcher used two tools for data collections , a questionnaire revised and verified by University level English teachers was used as a tool for data collection for a number of 20 University teachers and test administrated for a number of 50 students from Sudan University of science and Technology . college of languages English Department . that is to investigate the difficulties which encountered by students in pronouncing consonants sounds and offer suitable solutions for those difficulties. The results of this study revealed that, there are difficulties which encounter students in pronouncing consonant sounds because they have more than one way of pronunciation as well as the mother tongue interference , and the differences in the sound system . The researcher recommends that special attention should be drawn to use the audio and audiovisual especially language laboratories . which research thinks they will help in solving the difficulties encountered by students in pronouncing consonant sounds
