dc.description.abstractBackground: Gall stones formation is a multifactorial process and many studies have shown that insulin resistance is one of the associated factors; previous studies have been established to link between insulin resistance and gall stones disease. This study aims to evaluate insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) among gall stones patients in Khartoum state. Materials and methods: sixty individuals were enrolled in this study and divided into two groups, thirty patients with gall stones and thirty apparently healthy individuals as control group. Fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin were measured using fully automated devices, and then HOMA-IR was calculated. Results: results showed that the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) is significantly increased in gall stones patients when compared to control group p-value =0.001 The study showed insignificant difference in mean concentration of glucose and insulin resistance index among sex with p -value =0.611 and 0.623 respectively. But the study showed that there is significant increase in mean concentration of insulin among males with p- value=0.045. Also the study showed that there were insignificant correlation between age and HOMA-IR and between BMI and HOMA-IR, but there is strong positive correlation between HOMA-IR and glucose and insulin with pvalue =0.000 for both. Conclusion: The data suggested that the risk of gallstone formation increased in female, obese, postmenopausal women and was associated with changes in insulin resistance index.en_US
