This study aims to highlight the use of nature symbolism in Thomas Hardy s novels of Characters and Environment. The study investigates one of Hardy s most accomplished writing techniques in terms of his symbolic employment of natural features. The importance of this study emerges from the fact that Hardy s attitude of story-telling, along with his nature symbolism, has recently come to be associated with eco-critical studies which enhances eco-critics, as a literary genre, to find its right way to the modern literary criticism. Hardy s nature symbolism has proved to open new horizons for environmentalism; he has drawn the world s attention to the importance of nature. Accordingly, a great number of pressing groups are now starting to raise environmental issues in relation to global environment crisis.en_US
