Abstract: this study attempts to discuss the role of teaching literature in secondary schools , in Khartoum state –sharq elneel locality. Under the title appreciation of the reading skill and culture through teaching literature . literature in English language teaching can help students to engage in learning of English and at the same time improve their standard in language skills . since the researcher is teaching English language in secondary schools he discover that students have many difficulties in reading and expressing them selves . the researcher has follow the descriptive analytic method of his research and he has used (SPSS) statistical package social science programmed to analyze his data . the researcher attempts to introduced the method which is used to conduct the study and data collection tools ,the researcher used the questionnaire for collecting the data , and the sample of the study chosen from Sudanese secondary schools , English language teachers and students from sharq elneel locality schools
