Racism as Reflected in Toni Morrison's Novels

Abstract

The thesis entitledRacism as reflected in Toni Morrison's Novels deals with the suffering of African- Americans in the United States. The roots of this suffering are racism, slavery, oppression and marginalization in the life of African- Americans. Racism destroys the character's self -esteem and sense of self- worth of the African-American in the United States. Morrison's novels are the embodiment of this suffering , she writes about the problems of all humans race and especially about African- American. At the core of her novels, there is a penetrating view of the unyielding heart- breaking dilemma which torments people of all races. She has often been regarded as the foremost American literary voice for African- American people in the contemporary world. She is especially concerned with the way that African- American individuals and communities are expressive or silenced within a dominant culture which historically has been intolerant of racial difference. . The thesis investigates the various reasons that cause the African- Americans' suffering. They lived their life as slaves and were denied human status by their community. The thesis discusses their development as they pass from one state to another until they come to realize their true personality and their value.
