Abstract:
This case-control study designed to find out possible relationship between thyroid hormones, lipid
profile levels and glucose in patients suffering thyroid disorder in Elobeid city, North Kordofan
State. One hundred and fifty patients were enrolled in this study (40
male and 110 female), the age range 16 to 65 years. Patients were classified into two groups,
group one 100 new cases (hyperthyroidism before treatment) and group two was 50 patients with
hyperthyroidism under treatment, beside one hundred volunteers’ apparently healthy individuals,
which were matching in age and sex considered as control. The blood samples of all participants
were analyzed for the levels of TT3,TT4 and TSH using ELISA technique and for plasma glucose
and Lipid levels (total cholesterol, triglycerides (TGs), HDL-C, and LDL-C) using the enzymatic
spectrophotometeric method.
T3 and T4 were significantly increased in new cases compared with control p-value (<0.000 and
<0.000) at 0.05 level of significance.TSH on the other hand was significantly reduced at p-value
(<0.000). In hyperthyroidism under treatment T3.T4 and TSH were not altered in comparison
with control p-value (0.272, 0.633 and 0.061) at 0.05 level of significancy for T3.T4 and TSH
respectively.
Comparison of the lipids level of patients with the control, It showed that; the total Cholesterol,
LDL-C and HDL-C were significantly decreased, while triglycerides showed increased, with pvalue
(<0.000, <0.000 ,and <0.000) for total Cholesterol, LDL-C and HDL-C respectively. On the
other hand no significant difference was observed between values of females and males in the new
cases group resulting inp-values = (0.07 and 0.606) at 0.05 level of significancyfor LDL-C and
HDL-C respectively. Hyperthyroidism is predominated in females than males at a ratio of 3:1.
There are negative correlation between the level of lipids profile and thyroid hormones level (T3
and T4)and positive correlation with the triglycerides.
The presented results showed that thyroid disorder is associated with increase of blood sugar in
newly discovered patients when compared with controls groups. Whilehyperthyroidism under
treatment reporting no significant difference with control group.
The presented results showed that the blood glucose in the groups of thyroid hormones disorder
patientswasno correlated with T3, T4 and TSH
This study concludes that hyperthyroidism patients are associated with low plasma cholesterol
while triglycerides and blood sugar were increased compared with control.
