Abstract:
Now there is a sufficient evidence demonstrating that mortality from breast cancer can be reduced with the help of mammography screening ,x-ray mammography and ultrasound examinations, the mammograms remains grossly underutilized in the Sudan.
Objectives:
To correlate mammography & ultrasound findings in female patients presented with breast problems, so as to evaluate the ultrasound with the mammography results.
Setting:
The Academy Medical Centre,
(April 2004-January 2006)
Patient and Method
Participants were a consecutive sample of 100 female patients aged (25->56)
All had breast problems (masses, pain, inflammatory conditions, or nipple discharge)
All these patients were examined by mammogram & and followed by ultrasonography examinations.
Results:
Data were analyzed using Spss and X2 test between mammography finding & ultrasound findings.
The result was highly significant with (P-value 0.00)
U/S is an essential component of normal imaging evaluation of mammography
Conclusion:
The sensitivity of mammography is lowered in women with dense tissue(great amount of glandular tissue that includs:young ,pregnant, and lactating women)
The ultrasound offers additional information as complementary to biopsy of lesions detected mammographically.
