Abstract
The study is applied on pediatric Sudanese patients to characterize and
provide possible diagnostic information of seizure patient’s brain which in
most cases shows normal appearance. With MRI as main tool, a volumetric
measurements took place on temporal lobes and cerebral hemispheres.
53 pediatric patients aged from 2-14 years old were diagnosed with
suspected temporal lobe epilepsy according to seizure and request of brain
MRI received in MRI department. Control group of 15 and diseased group of
38 were studied, underwent epilepsy protocol and T1, T2 and FLAIR images
obtained and manual tracing of temporal lobes and cerebral hemispheres
executed and area were calculated. Volume measurements and ratios are
compared between structures of both diseased and control groups. Most
patients were in age from 4-11 years old and showed reduce in volume of
temporal lobe and hemisphere than normal. 73.5% of all sample showed RT
temporal lobe larger than LT as (28/38) 73.6% of the diseased sample and
73.3% of the control sample (11/15). Temporal lobe and cerebral hemisphere
and temporal lobe to hemisphere ratio were all increased with age linearly.
The radiologist independently reviewed all the MR images. Evaluation
of temporal lobes signal intensity showed that 2 pediatrics demonstrated
changes in signal intensity.
Results presented in the study are compatible with similar findings in
previous studies, showing that volume measurements, ratios and signal
intensity changes are associated with seizure patients. |
