CT scan is one of the most valuable tools used in modern health care .CT scan contributes for nearly 49% of the total number of radiological examinations in European Union. Therefore, CT scan must be used carefully to reduce patients radiation dose.
The aim of this study intended to measure the radiation dose in CT scan of the brain.Random samples consist of 30 patients who underwent CT scan for brain examination. The patients were registered data (age, gender, type of examination, clinical examination, exposure factor (mA, kV, sec) and slice thickness. Out of this sample,12 patients were females while the 18 were males and their ages ranged from 16 to 60 years old. The study was done in–(Royal care) and (Royal scan) hospital-Khartoum, Sudan. Data were collected in the period from July 2012 to December 2012.
The mean CTDI in CT brain scan was 79.1±1.8 and the range was 77.3 to 80.8 mGyper procedure.
The study shows that there is a large dose variation between different CT scan units used for the same radiographic study. When performing CT scan examinations different exposure factors for different patients must be used. The radiation doses for this study were larger than the most previous studies and the reference level. |
