Abstract:
This study was carriedout in the period from May 2007- March 2008 to detect
the presence of Salmonella paratyphi B in patient’s suspected to have
paratyphoid fever. Fourty seven blood specimens were collected from patients
attended Umdorman Teaching Hospital, Khartoum teaching hospital, Alribat
and Jafar Ibn Ouf Pediatric's hospitals. Bacterial DNA was extracted from
each blood specimen using Phenol –Chloroform technique. Quantica
thermocycler was used to detect Salmonella paratyphi B. The result revealed
that 22 (46.8%) specimens were positive and 25 (53.2%) were negative. The
study concluded that the real-time PCR technique facilitates detection of
bacterial pathogens without bacteriological culture.
