Abstract:
Hundred pa ents (60 women and 40 men) of ages between (35-80)
years with type2 diabetes mellitus disease and also 50 apparently non-
diabetic subjects were enrolled in this study in order to study the impact
of diabetes mellitus disease on the concentration of sodium and
potassium. Patients and controls were match in ages.
All the participants were seen at Atbara hospital in which all the
investigations and chemical assessment were done by specialize
physician.
SPSS Program was used for the analysis of the data obtained.
The results obtained from this study revealed that the majority of
patients presented with poor glycemic control and of some diabetic
complications and other diseases.
The results of study show highly significant elevation of random blood
glucose and high percentage of HbA1c in the blood in comparison with
control, 200 mg/dl and 8.7% were seen for random blood glucose and
HbA1c in diabe c pa ents respec vely.
The study also show that electrolytes sodium and potassium levels were
not affected by diabetes mellitus, and value remained with in normal
reference value.
The study also showed that no correlation between the electrolytes and
blood sugar measured as random blood glucose or HbA1c, but moderate
posi ve correla on has seen between sodium and potassium (r=0.450,
p=0.032).The study concluded that diabetes mellitus of type2 has no
effect on the level of the electrolytes sodium and potassium in the
patients participated in this study.
