Abstract:
The study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between enlarged spleen size and the portal vein diameter changes. It was carried on 150 patients of known causes of splenomegaly, (Schistosoma, visceral leishmaniasis, Malaria, chronic renal failure, anemia, liver cirrhosis, chronic myeloid leukemia).
Portal vein diameter was graded into grade (0), grade(I), grade (II) , grade (III), splemnomegaly was graded into mild, moderate, gross.
When both spleen and portal vein diameter changes correlated to each other, the study showed that in portal vein diameter grade (0), the average spleen size was of (15.16-16.23 cm) as moderate to gross splenomegaly, that in Malaria (96%), chronic myeloid leukemia (20%).
In portal vein diameter grade (I), the average spleen size was of (16-18.11cm) as moderate to gross splenomegaly in anemia (100%), chronic myeloid leukemia (65%).
In portal vein diameter grade (II), the average spleen size was of (14.6-19.20 cm) as moderate to gross splenomegaly, that in schistosoma (70%), visceral leishmaniasis (80%), liver cirrhosis (67%), chronic myeloid leukemia (10%), chronic renal failure (100%).
In portal vein diameter grade (III), the average spleen size was of (20.70-21.20cm) as gross splenomegaly, that in visceral leishmaniasis (20%), schistosoma (30%), liver cirrhosis (33%), chronic myeloid leukemia (5%).
The study concluded that splenomegaly has relationship to portal vein diameter changes, and the relation is proportional in schistosoma, visceral leishmaniasis and chronic myeloid leukemia.
