Abstract:
Learning a foreign language has become easy nowadays, but it is difficult to speak it as it is, for this reason linguistics has been chosen for this research which is entitled (role of context in understanding the intended meaning among Sudanese learners as French language).
We have found that students who were selected from university of Khartoum to the scientific work shop held at the French branch, Khartoum University are very good in French language.
We have noticed as French language learners and teachers that some students speak French with the help of their mother tongue in understanding the meaning. This is one of the reasons which results some problems that may face students when speaking with a native speaker.
This problem will be discussed with the help of Ducro’s ideas in understanding the meaning. There is also a critical study on Ducro’s ideas who in turn assumes that in the process of understanding, what is( said) is rather important than the (speaker) and the( listener). So, as learners and speakers of this language, we explained our view on Ducrot’s theory.
In this research, we concluded that when student speaks foreign language whit the help hits native language, he encounters some problems in understanding the foreign language therefore, and he should distance himself from his native language. We arrived also that punctuation is playing an important role in the understanding process whether it was written or verbal. When we ignore punctuation, we distance from the appropriate understanding. We also reached that pronouns are playing remarkable role in understanding process as we can not understand a correct sentence without knowing who is the (speaker), (why) and to whom is being (addressed).
