Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to establish the range of kidney sizes in healthy Pakistani population and to establish some preliminary data of our population. I determine the ultrasonographic kidney dimensions in individuals without known renal disease.
METHODS: Ultrasonographic kidney measurements were performed on hundred people without known kidney lesions. Measurements included length, width, thickness and estimation of renal size, which was obtained by these measurements.
RESULTS: The mean kidney length was 10.1 +/- 0.7 cm. Mean kidney width 4.5 +/- 0.5 cm and mean thickness 3.2 +/- 0.4 cm. Kidney lengths did not significantly differ between right and left, however, kidney width, thickness and size did (< 0.4). Right kidneys were smaller than the left ones.
CONCLUSION: We concluded that renal size is related to age, side, sex and the individual height and weight. More population – based studies are needed to establish the normal values for Pakistani population.
