Abstract:
Medical ultrasound examination nowadays becomes a routine investigation for most of the disease, because this type of investigation can be carried easily with low cost and risk. But still examination of some parts of the body by ultrasound need to be familiarize through intensive research in order to correlate the displayed features with the gold standard findings.
Therefore this study was carried out to measure the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing benign cystic breast masses, by correlating and comparing ultrasound findings and biopsy examination results.
This study was conducted in Fath El Rahman El Bashir Complex clinic in the period from June to November 2008. The study was done on 50 females’ patients whose age ranges between 18 - 40 years whom were suffering from breast masses.
The result of the study showed that overall accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing benign cystic breast masses was 78% versus fine needle aspiration biopsy (cystological examinations) so the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing benign cystic breast masses in details as follow:
Fibro adenoma 81.8%
Fibro cystic adenoma 76.5%
Abscess 100%
Galactocele 50%
Ductectasia 50%
The study has been carried out on females, and males have been excluded .
