Abstract:
This is cross-sectional descriptive study which is carried out in
Khartoum teaching hospital to identify the values on different
hematological parameters of cord blood.
100 cord blood samples were collected in the Khartoum teaching
hospital by experienced midwives trained in cord blood collection, cord
blood samples were collected from normal vaginal deliveries and
caesarean deliveries before placental delivery.
The study revealed hemoglobin mean value of healthy Sudanese
cord blood at birth was 14.85± 1.35 g/dl, mean of hematocrit level was
0.45 L/L ± 5.47, mean cell volume was 104.1 fl ± 7.2 , mean cell
hemoglobin was 33.7 pg ±2.6, mean cell hemoglobin concentration was
32.3 g/dl ±1.4. The study revealed that mean values for red cell count
of Sudanese cord blood was 4.40x1012 /L± 0.5, and cord blood
nucleated red blood cells count 2.1 /100 WBCs ± 1.3 and absolute
nucleated red blood cells count were 263.5x109 /L ± 200.
Total leukocyte count with mean value of 13.2 x10 9/L ± 5.4, mean
values of neutrophil and lymphocyte absolute counts were 7.1 x109 /L ±
3.2 and 5.12 x109/L ± 2.3 respectively. Mean value of platelet count
was224.6 x109 /L ± 73.6.
Overall reticulocyte count was 4.85 % ± 1.5, corrected
reticulocyte count (CRC) 4.32 ± 1.3, absolute reticulocyte count (ARC)
239.6 x109/L ± 5.86 and mean reticulocyte production index (RPI) 4.3
± 1.46.
