Abstract:
The objective of this study is to detect the role of ultrasound in diagnosing focal liver
diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia –2007 - 2008 and to compare them with the
previous studies. This study depends on practical scanning through which the data was
collected in a configuration of easy short questions; the data was collected from 1 st
March 2007 to 5th March 2008.
200 patients from different areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were scanned in the
western and middle Area in many hospitals, which include:
- Dr. Erfan & Bagedo General Hospital – Jeddah – Western Area - KSA
- Riyadh Central Hospital –- Riyadh – Middle Area - KSA

The percentage of the role of ultrasound in diagnose focal liver diseases in 200
patients in the western and middle area in K.S.A from 2007 to 2008 was (71.8%),
The cases undetected by the ultrasound in that period were as the following:
- 24.6% of the cases needed further investigations by CT and MRI.
- 3.6% cases by hisotopathological analysis.
Detection of focal liver diseases by ultrasound in 2007– 2008 was lower than 71.8%
compared with a previous study 91.5%.
Abdominal ultrasound must be done early to discover the abnormality if present, and
look for suitable solutions, also it is an accurate modality for detecting focal liver
diseases because it is non –invasive, cheep, and an available method.
